What type of person is chosen to have their name placed on a building or sports arena? It must be a person whose name carries such significance, like a torch leading the way for students to follow. A person who is not to be forgotten, but the memory of them only grows stronger.
Can you see it… Your name spread across the softball stadium as the winning run streaks over the field casting a beautiful reflection of your dedication to the sport?
Have you ever met that person? He is a gem, a relationship to be treasured.
My dad’s cousin, Fred Dohrmann, isn’t a diamond in the rough because he is a man who has manners, education, and style. He is a shining example of how a man should live his life.
What makes Fred worthy?
Fred has committed 43 years to Widener University in the athletic department, coaching and as an athletic director. His career started as the soccer coach and continued as the head Softball coach. He amassed more wins, leading the greatest number of victories in one sport in the school’s history.
But that is not what makes Fred so special. Fred shares it’s not about the success, “But the relationships that have been made with coaches and players will last a lifetime and far outweigh the wins and losses.” It isn’t about what Fred does, but who he is.
Fred’s Legacy Will Live On
Fred’s family is a reflection of who he is. They have been with him tirelessly as he battles Glioblastoma, a very fast-growing stage 4 brain cancer. They are family who leans in, advocating on his behalf.
As a young girl I took to him, but did not truly appreciate who he is until I had daughters of my own. He took an interest in my own daughters as well, making time to attend a college visit with me and my older daughter. He remains interested in my girls and their future aspirations.
Fred leads by example and demonstrates consistency in behavior. He continues to leave his mark on everyone he meets. His legacy is so much more than a name on a field, but a lasting impression on each relationship which will extend far past his own lifetime.
How can you be part of Team Fred?
I have been praying for Fred and his family as they navigate this difficult journey. Fred’s family is asking for “Positive Vibes” to be sent. They have been very positive and a strong source of encouragement. Handwritten notes are being accepted requesting support of naming the softball field after him. Letters should be mailed to:
Jack Shafer, Director of Athletics, One University Place, Widener University, Chester, PA, 19013.
Fred sounds like a wonderful man. Prayers for him in the battle.
